Frequently Asked Questions

  • About Water Polo and USA Water Polo
    • What is Water Polo? - Water polo is a competitive team water sport played in a pool with goals positioned at both ends.  A Water Polo game is played by two opposing teams and while a team roster may include 15 or more players, only 7 players (6 field players and a goal keeper) are in the pool during game play.  A game consists of 4 quarters (similar to American Football) during which each team tries to score the most goals by throwing the ball into the opposing teams goal (similar to soccer).  The team with the most goals at the end of a match wins.  Water Polo games are typically played in deep water (usually 6ft deep or more).  Players are not allowed to touch the bottom or sides of the pool during game play.  Players must swim with & without the ball, egg beater (a special style of treading water), throw, catch and shoot the ball.  The field players may only use one hand, but the goalkeeper may use two hands.  Field players are expected to be able to play both offense and defense (similar to basketball).

    • During what time of the year is Water Polo played? - Water Polo is played year round - starting in the fall and continuing through the winter, spring and summer.  Kahuna's Water Polo programs are also offered year round and are divided into 4 quarters:  fall (September - November), winter (December - February), spring (March - May) and summer (June - July).  Although we hold practices in August, we recognize that many of our members choose to take vacations during this month, and as a result, our competition schedule for August only includes a very fun beach tournament that is co-hosted by Kahuna.  In addition, our high school club members practice with their HS teams exclusively during their competitive seasons (fall for HS boys and winter for HS girls).

    • Who can play Water Polo? - Water safe athletes (boys and girls) ages 8 - 18 may play Water Polo with the Irvine Kahuna Water Polo Club.  Advanced swimmers younger than 8 years old are also welcome to play Water Polo with our club.  Swimming is an essential and core skill in Water Polo and it takes on greater importance with each successive age group.  For example, a 9 year old just starting out in Water Polo should at least be water safe and able to swim freestyle non-stop for 25 yards.  In comparison, a 13 or 14 year old joining the sport for the first time should be a proficient swimmer in at least freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke.
